Open Source Software
Litecoin is an open source software project released under the MIT/X11 license which gives you the power to run, modify, and copy the software and to distribute, at your option, modified copies of the software. The software is released in a transparent process that allows for independent verification of binaries and their corresponding source code.
Blockchain
The Litecoin blockchain is capable of handling higher transaction volume than its counterpart - Bitcoin. Due to more frequent block generation, the network supports more transactions without a need to modify the software in the future. As a result, merchants get faster confirmation times, while still having ability to wait for more confirmations when selling bigger ticket items.
Wallet Encryption
Wallet encryption allows you to secure your wallet, so that you can view transactions and your account balance, but are required to enter your password before spending litecoins. This provides protection from wallet-stealing viruses and trojans as well as a sanity check before sending payments.
Mining Reward
Miners are currently awarded with 12.5 new litecoins per block, an amount which gets halved roughly every 4 years (every 840,000 blocks). The Litecoin network is therefore scheduled to produce 84 million litecoins, which is 4 times as many currency units as Bitcoin.

What Is Litecoin (LTC)?
Litecoin (LTC) is a cryptocurrency created from a fork in the Bitcoin blockchain in 2011. It was initially designed to address the developer's concerns that Bitcoin was becoming too centrally controlled, and to make it more difficult for largescale mining firms to gain the upper hand in mining. While eventually unsuccessful in preventing enterprise miners from taking over the lion's share of Litecoin mining, the cryptocurrency has reworked itself into a minable coin and a peer-to-peer payment system.

Understanding Litecoin (LTC)
One of Litecoin's original missions was to discourage enterprise-sized miners from gaining control of the mining process by using a different encryption method. However, miners quickly adapted their specialized machines and continued to grow their mining capacity.
Litecoin is minable using ASIC miners, much like Bitcoin is. A block within a blockchain stores transaction information. The block is verified by mining software and made visible to any system participant (called a miner) who wants to see it. Once a miner verifies it, the next block in the chain is created, and Litecoin is rewarded.
Charlie Lee
Released to the public in 2011 by former Google engineer Charlie Lee, Litecoin is an open-source global payment network not controlled by a central authority. Lee referred to Litecoin as “the silver to Bitcoin’s gold."
Rather than focusing on its functionality, many investors are interested in Litecoin as a potential long-term holding. They speculate that Litecoin will build relative wealth over time like other investments.
Litecoin Maximum Supply
Litecoin was released with 150 pre-mined coins and has a total supply of 84 million coins. The cryptocurrency’s blockchain generates a new block every 2.5 minutes. The Litecoin supply is designed to reduce over time to preserve the coin's value.
As of August 2023, there are just under 10.5 million Litecoins left to mine.
Litecoin Halving
Halving refers to reducing the reward given when a block's hash and the transaction information within the block are validated and a new block is created. Halving reduces the number of Litecoins awarded by one-half, which helps to slow down the creation of new coins.
Halving dates for LTC:
Aug. 25, 2015: 50 to 25 LTCsAug. 5, 2019: 25 to 12.5 LTCsAug. 23, 2023 (expected): 12.5 to 6.25 LTCs
Litecoin Hashing Algorithm
Litecoin uses a hashing algorithm called Scrypt (pronounced es-crypt). Scrypt is more memory-intensive and slower than SHA-256. But it found greater acceptance in the cryptocurrency community after the 2011 Tenebrix project modified Scrypt to work with regular CPUs for mining.
The significantly larger memory requirements for Scrypt also made it difficult to develop application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners. But its ASIC-resistant setup didn't last long: the world’s first Litecoin ASIC miners were released in 2014.
Litecoin Developments
Litecoin has moved away from its mining ecosystem dominated by individual miners to a corporatized setup, where large mining pools run by tech firms account for an overwhelming majority of Litecoin mining.
It has a much lower market capacity than more popular coins. However, it is still one of the most traded cryptocurrencies, maintaining a position within the top 15 coins out of the more than 10,000 tracked by CoinMarketCap. This demonstrates that it is still a popular cryptocurrency but doesn't have the investor interest that Bitcoin and some newer coins have.
Where to Buy Litecoin
Most cryptocurrencies can be purchased on cryptocurrency exchanges. Several exchanges can conduct transactions within the United States; many more are outside the U.S. It's important to note that exchanges within the U.S. are monitored and regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission to ensure that the best interests of investors and traders are upheld. With that in mind, if you live in the U.S., your choices are limited to exchanges within the U.S.
Because exchanges are regulated and regulations are still being developed, the places you can buy and sell cryptocurrencies fluctuate.
Exchanges outside the U.S. may or may not have regulatory authorities, although many countries have implemented controls or granted regulatory authority to their financial regulating agencies. Some U.S. exchanges where you can buy Litecoin are:

How to Sell Litecoin
You can sell your Litecoin on the same exchanges where you can purchase it. However, selling your crypto on a centralized exchange is different than selling it on a decentralized one. For example, if you're selling your Litecoin on an exchange like Kraken, you'll need to send your LTC to your Kraken address. From there, the exchange facilitates the sales of your Litecoin.
If you're using a decentralized exchange like Kucoin or Crypto.com, you connect your wallet to the exchange and go through the "know your customer (or client)" registration process. Once approved, you can deposit your Litecoin and begin selling it.
Some exchanges may let you withdraw fiat currency, so if you're looking to exchange your LTC for fiat, you'll have to find an exchange that allows it.
How is Litecoin Different From Bitcoin?
The first difference between Litecoin and Bitcoin lies in their maximum supply cap. Bitcoin has a supply capped at 21 million, while Litecoin’s supply is constrained to 84 million.
Another distinction between Litecoin and Bitcoin lies in the protocols to mine coins. As mentioned earlier, Bitcoin uses SHA-256 and Litecoin relies on a modified version of Scrypt to generate coins. The difference in protocols has implications on transaction processing times for both coins. Litecoin is four times as fast as Bitcoin in processing and confirming transactions.
The speed in processing transactions can come at the expense of security because fewer rounds of transaction verification are involved. Litecoin’s confirmation time of 2.5 minutes (as opposed to the roughly 10 minutes that Bitcoin takes to confirm transactions) is convenient for small merchants who do not want or need their transactions to be super secure.
Will Litecoin Have a Future?
It is difficult to determine how investors, traders, cryptocurrency fans, governments, and the general public will treat Litecoin in the future. Cryptocurrency is being scrutinized by governments, more cryptocurrencies are being created every day, and the markets are volatile.
Is Litecoin Still a Good Investment?
Litecoin wasn't intended to be a speculative investment or a method of storing value. However, some investors use LTC this way, and some don't. It's best to consult a professional advisor to see if Litecoin is a good investment for you.
What Is Better, Litecoin or Ethereum?
Litecoin is a cryptocurrency designed for peer-to-peer transactions. Ethereum is an ecosystem that runs on a global virtual machine that powers many different cryptography-based technologies. Ethereum has a token, ether (ETH), used to facilitate transactions within the Ethereum blockchain. In terms of value, ETH generally ranks in the top five and has more trading volume. Which is better depends on your interests, goals, and intended uses.

Litecoin (LTC) is an alternative cryptocurrency created in October 2011 by Charles "Charlie" Lee, a former Google engineer. Litecoin was adapted from Bitcoin's open-source code but with several modifications. Like Bitcoin, Litecoin is based on an open-source global payment network that is not controlled by any central authority. Litecoin differs from Bitcoin in aspects like faster block generation rate and use of Scrypt (pronounced es-scrypt) as a proof of work scheme.

The History of Litecoin (LTC)
Litecoin is considered to be among the first altcoins, derived from Bitcoin's original open-source code. Initially, it was a strong competitor to Bitcoin. However, as the cryptocurrency market has become more saturated and competitive, Litecoin's popularity has waned somewhat.
Litecoin has always been viewed as a reaction to Bitcoin. In fact, when creator Charlie Lee announced the debut of Litecoin on a popular Bitcoin forum, he called it the "lite version of Bitcoin." For this reason, Litecoin has many of the same features as Bitcoin, while also adapting and changing some other aspects that the development team felt could be improved.
On October 2023, 1 LTC was worth around $61, making it the 15th-largest crypto with a market cap of just over $4.5 billion.
Litecoin was developed by Charlie Lee, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a former Google engineer who became interested in Bitcoin in 2011. According to Lee, "In October of 2011, I was playing around with the Bitcoin codebase, and I guess the short of it was that I was just trying to create...a fork of Bitcoin. It was mainly a fun side project."
Like Bitcoin, the maximum number of LTC is fixed. There will never be more than 84 million Litecoins in circulation. Every 2.5 minutes, the Litecoin network generates a new block—a ledger entry of recent Litecoin transactions. The block is verified by mining software and made visible to any system participant who wants to see it. Once a miner verifies it, the next block enters the chain, which is a record of every Litecoin transaction ever made.
There are incentives for mining Litecoin: the first miner to successfully verify a block is rewarded with 6.25 Litecoins. As with Bitcoin, the number of litecoins awarded for such a task reduces with time. In August 2019, it was halved, then in August 2023, and the halving will continue at regular intervals until the 84,000,000th litecoin is mined. The Litecoin Foundation estimates it will be around 2142 when the maximum of 84 million Litecoins will be reached.
Segwit
Segregated Witness (Segwit) was first proposed for Bitcoin in 2015. It works by "segregating" the digital signal data (the "witness") outside the base block in the blockchain. SegWit was developed to address Bitcoin's scalability issue, but the proposal created deep controversy within the Bitcoin community.
In 2017, Litecoin adopted SegWit, and because of Litecoin's similarity to Bitcoin, it worked as a testing ground or testnet for SegWit's viability on the larger Bitcoin network. The test was a success, and Bitcoin adopted SegWit thereafter. Some opponents of the SegWit adoption who advocated for larger Bitcoin block sizes created a Bitcoin hard fork that resulted in Bitcoin Cash.
Lightning Network
The Lightning Network is a second-layer technology for Bitcoin that uses micropayment channels to scale its blockchain’s capability to conduct transactions.
Similar to the SegWit example, the implementation of the Lightning Network on Litecoin was a test net to prove innovations are possible on Bitcoin. Charlie Lee has also argued that when “the Bitcoin blockchain is congested, and the fees are high, it’s easy to use Litecoin to onboard onto the Lightning Network.” Litecoin integrated the Lightning Network in 2018.
Scrypt Proof-of-Work Algorithm
Bitcoin, Litecoin, and many other cryptocurrencies use the proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm to secure their networks. Basically, PoW requires that one party proves to all the other participating parties in the network that a required amount of computational effort has been expended. Unlike Bitcoin, which uses the SHA-256 PoW hashing algorithm, Litecoin uses the less resource-intensive scrypt PoW algorithm.
Scrypt is a password-based key derivation function. According to Tarsnip, "the scrypt key derivation function was originally developed for use in the Tarsnap online backup system and is designed to be far more secure against hardware brute-force attacks than alternative functions such as PBKDF2 or bcrypt."
Lee developed scrypt specifically to make large-scale, custom-built hardware attacks on the currency more difficult. Bitcoin's SHA-256 algorithm does not require a lot of random access memory (RAM) as an impediment to parallel processing, whereas Scrypt does.
At the beginning of the 2010s, as mining operations developed specialized hardware—like the application-specific circuit (ASIC) to solve SHA-256 hashing—it appeared that Bitcoin was vulnerable to such an attack. By making Litecoin's consensus algorithm memory intensive, Lee sought to thwart the hardware arms race, though in practice, that didn't happen as the rise of GPU mining answered the need for greater RAM.
Litecoin (LTC) vs. Bitcoin (BTC)
Litecoin was launched with the aim of being the "silver" to Bitcoin's "gold." Like Bitcoin, Litecoin is a peer-to-peer internet currency. It is a fully decentralized, open-source, global payment network. Lee developed Litecoin with the aim to improve on Bitcoin's shortcomings. Litecoin is designed to produce four times as many blocks as Bitcoin (1 new block every 2.5 minutes to Bitcoin's 10), and it also allows for 4x the coin limit, making its main appeal over Bitcoin speed and ease of acquisition. However, because Litecoin uses scrypt (as opposed to Bitcoin's SHA-256) as a proof-of-work algorithm, mining hardware such as ASIC miners or a GPU mining rig requires significantly more processing power.
Litecoin ranked in the top 15 largest cryptocurrencies in terms of market capitalization (though remaining far below that of Bitcoin). As of October 2023, it had more than 73 million coins in circulation.

Future Plans for Litecoin (LTC)
Litecoin has implemented several features since its launch intended to improve its transaction speed without compromising the security and integrity of the network. According to Litecoin, there's one project left (on its project page) to integrate into the blockchain, called MimbleWimble.
MimbleWimble is a privacy protocol that builds on confidential transactions that encrypt or obscure information like transaction amounts. It is argued that MimbleWimble can decrease blocksize and increase scalability. Charlie Lee announced in early 2019 that Litecoin would pursue MimbleWimble development, which is underway (as of October 2023).

Litecoin can be used as a P2P method for paying people anywhere in the world without an intermediary having to process the transaction. It can also be viewed as a store of value or as a component of a diversified crypto portfolio.

Bitcoin vs. Litecoin: An Overview
Since Bitcoin was founded, hundreds of other cryptocurrencies have been forked from it or been created. Litecoin (LTC), a Bitcoin fork, is one of these altcoins—the term for cryptocurrencies that are not Bitcoin. While Litecoin is based on the same underlying blockchain and verification method as Bitcoin, several key differences might help you decide which is right for your interests and goals.

Bitcoin
Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency to be introduced in 2009. Since then, it has evolved from a novelty into a controversial commodity, investment, and exchangeable currency. It relies on decentralized and community computing power to maintain the validity and security of a centralized database, called a blockchain.
Some notable Bitcoin properties that make it unique are:
Proof-of-work: The consensus mechanism and validation process that uses computational power to verify transactions and blocks in the blockchain.
It uses SHA-256: The cryptographic hash function that encrypts the blockchain. The hash function converts input to an output of fixed length to encrypt it.
Litecoin
Litecoin was launched in 2011 by former Google engineer Charlie Lee, who announced the debut of the "lite version of Bitcoin" via a posted message on a popular Bitcoin forum. From its founding, Litecoin was seen as being created in reaction to Bitcoin's tendency to gravitate towards centralization.
For this reason, Litecoin adopts many of the features of Bitcoin that Lee and other developers felt worked well for Bitcoin in its early stages. Litecoin has other aspects that the development team felt could be improved upon. Some of Litecoin's notable properties are:
Proof-of-work: Litecoin uses proof-of-work, but it relies on access to large amounts of memory rather than processing unit computing power only.Uses Scrypt: Litcoin employs Scrypt (pronounced ess-crypt) for its hashing function. Scrypt uses SHA-256 but includes much higher memory requirements for proof-of-work.
While Litecoin uses proof-of-work, it is a much less energy-intensive network than Bitcoin, possibly due to the difference in popularity. On Nov. 1, 2023, the Litecoin network hashrate averaged 750,307 Th/s, while the Bitcoin network hashed at 477,282 Eh/sec—more than 1 million times that of Litecoin.
Key Differences
The most significant difference between Litecoin and Bitcoin is its hashing function. As mentioned earlier, Bitcoin uses SHA-256, which is processed very quickly on the ALUs of graphics processing units and specialized machines.
Market Capitalization
Another area in which Bitcoin and Litecoin differ significantly is their market capitalization, the total dollar market value of all the created coins. Bitcoin is more popular because of its ability to be mined by large farms and mining pools; also, demand for it has risen so high that it commands a very high exchange rate. Litecoin has a much smaller market capacity because Bitcoin has a smaller supply and greater demand, and the market expects more from it.
Distribution
Another of the main differences between Bitcoin and Litecoin concerns the total number of coins each cryptocurrency can produce. This is where Litecoin distinguishes itself. The Bitcoin network can never exceed 21 million coins, whereas Litecoin can accommodate 84 million coins.
In theory, this sounds like a significant advantage for Litecoin; however, supply and demand generally dictate prices for commodities and investments—along with consumer and investor sentiments. Both appear to believe that Bitcoin aligns with their interests, values, and financial goals, so its price reflects that.
Transaction Speed
Although advertised as accommodating instantaneous transactions, both the Bitcoin and Litecoin networks require time for those transactions to be confirmed by network participants. Litecoin was founded with the goal of prioritizing transaction speed.
The Bitcoin network’s average transaction confirmation time (the time it takes for a block to be verified and added to the blockchain) is around nine minutes per transaction. However, this can vary widely depending on network traffic. The equivalent figure for Litecoin is roughly two and a half minutes.
Is Litecoin Better Than Bitcoin?
Which is better depends on your goals, what you want to do with your coins, and your views on cryptocurrency. Litecoins are generated faster than Bitcoin, but Bitcoin is worth more. Bitcoin might be better if you want more value per coin, while Litecoin might be better if you want more coins at a lesser value.
How Many Litecoins Are Left?
Litecoin has a limit of 84 million coins. There were 73.83 million on Nov. 1, 2023, so as of that date, there were roughly 10.2 million left.
Does Litecoin Have a Future?
Litecoin's future depends on consumer and investor sentiments. Government regulations, economic conditions, government-sponsored cryptocurrency, and more can also affect its future. It's possible that future technological advancements could render cryptocurrencies obsolete.
Why Is Litecoin So Cheap?
Litecoin has a lower LTC/USD exchange rate and less purchasing power because it has a larger supply and lower demand than other cryptocurrencies. This is largely due to consumer and investor perspectives—if a means of exchange can purchase more goods, it is worth more. If a commodity or investment has a higher value for people, they will pay more for it. Bitcoin is currently perceived as a more valuable asset, so it is worth more.

Bitcoin is the original and most popular cryptocurrency. Litecoin is a hard fork of Bitcoin that uses a different consensus mechanism. Each is designed as a payment method, but they have also become instruments for speculation and investing.
